New students are often surprised at how many situations Reiki can be useful, they can also harbor very real concerns about how to introduce their new Reiki lifestyle to friends and relatives who might not understand what they are doing...
I don't spend a lot of time explaining Reiki the first time I introduce it to someone new. I'll just say, "It's a Reiki thing." and leave it at that...unless they ask for more details and then I try to intuitively figure out what level of explanation they are ready for...mostly I just demonstrate.
Christmas day was a move forward for our family. My oldest daughter, her husband, and my two grand babies came over for dinner after having their traditional Christmas morning at home. Recently I attuned my daughter in levels I and II and since her attunement have been encouraging her to use Reiki every day so that her husband would get used to seeing her doing it even though he doesn't understand it and to date hasn't wanted to be involved. At my house, on sacred days, I always place an individual Reiki charged candle at each place setting and ask my family and guests to hold their candle before their meal and think about something or someone who makes them happy. This meal was no different, except this year, my grand babies each got to hold their own candles.
What a lovely evening, introducing Reiki to a new generation even though they are too young to understand what Reiki is. What they do understand is lighting candles, blowing out candle, and making wishes (making me wonder if the first birthday candle was a Reiki candle)...
So after lighting and blowing the candles out, I explained to them that I was going to light the candles again...and this time we were going to put the candles on a special plate in the center of the table to make our dinner happy, thinking about all the people and things that make us happy. I can't express what a beautiful moment it was, seeing my grand babies smiling faces as they took part, or the look of happiness on my daughter's face as her husband lit her candle, and through our meal, having the glow of our candles lighting our faces.
Reiki, every day, in every situation...

Fill Your Mind With Positive Thoughts
Every morning should be greeted with the Reiki Precepts once you choose to follow a Reiki Lifestyle:
Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today I will not worry.
Just for today I will not be angry.
Just for today I will do my work honestly.
Just for today I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing.
But is that enough?
For me, I love positive affirmations...and I consider myself to be a quote collector...memorizing random quotes that make me feel good on the inside and thoughts that I can share with others when they are experiencing "bad days". Here are a few of my favorites in addition to the ones that have already found a permanent place on this page...
"Just for Today, I will know that I am moving in the direction that is best for me. I will follow my own path and not question where it will lead. I will have complete faith the path I follow will lead me to where I am to go. I will thank my higher power for the wisdom and insight to show me this path and the ability to follow this path without fear. Today and every day, I am grateful!" --Robin Wallace (as found at Positive Affirmations)
"Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." --Nathaniel Hawthorne
"My role in the Universe is important." --author unknown

We Are Spiritual Beings...
I hope that you already recognize the above words as truth, or that they resonate with your soul as bearing a yet not understood truth because we are all sacred, spiritual beings and as such recognize that we are more than just our physical bodies. We are so much more than what our senses tell us and by opening our minds a new awareness and knowledge we possessed not before becomes available. Listening to our internal intuition is the first path to ths new knowledge. By expanding beyond the physical realm we are then open to the Akashic Library, the knowledge of all that ever was or ever will be, if only we open our minds...
You may ask, why does it even matter if I see myself as a Spiritual Being?
My answer would be to imagine the world if we could all just recognize this one truth, putting aside the arguements of religion and just Being...
By honoring our Sacred Beings we come to a state of peace within ourselves.
By honoring the Sacredness of others and recognizing that the same invisible holiness flowing through ourselves runs through all others compassion and unconditional love become natural responses. Motives then become based from love and the betterment of all concerned...a universal link regardless of whether you are male, or female, regardless of race, or nationality, or even religion because those human labels become just that...when really we are all One.
Maybe it's impossible to imagine such a world, but I can live it as my world, and I can try to pass on that lesson to others. But back to the original question, why bother? What's in it for me?
By embracing your sacredness you unite with the Universal Creator and thus will never feel alone or lonely again. You will never feel a lack of love, because the love you feel within will fill you completely. Others faults and weaknesses will no longer annoy you because you will be filled with a love and compassion for them regardless.
By embracing your sacredness, you will beome empowered though you will feel no desire to control or dominate others and others attempts to control and dominance you will mean nothing.
So, that's it...what's in it for you...peace, bliss, joy, power, freedom.

Solstice Blessings
Imagine living in the times before electricity. Days began an ended with the sun, with winter bringing days that were daylight only eight hours; however for those in the very far north even fewer hours than that held light. Cold or freezing temperatures could mean days of little or no food, bringing a fear for your very survival and the survival of your family.
The Winter Solstice being the longest night...and the vigil you would keep, waiting for the light, knowing that with that light would gradually come longer days...becoming a celebration common to almost every culture on the planet.
How has our modern day holiday evolved from what it once was, a simple celebration of life of returning light?
The celebration of the Winter Solstice, Yule, almost always falls on December 22, and it has retained many of its Pagan traditions although in recent centuries it was adopted as the birthdate of Jesus by the Christian religions. In early times, December 25th was commemorated as the Birth of the Sun God, Mithra, and January 6 (Old Christmas) was a Dionysian festival. In Egypt, a celebration dedicated to Osiris was held at this time.
The word Yule probably derives from the Norse "iul" or the Anglo-Saxon "hweol", both meaning "wheel". However, Webster's Dictionary states that it originates in "geola" (Old English for "ice"), another name for the month during which it was celebrated. "Modronacht" (Mother's Night) is yet another Name for the Midwinter Festival.
Many of Yule's original customs have survived thousands of years. Among them is the ever-popular Yule Log. Traditionally, the Yule Log has been of oak, ash or beech, ritually cut (often at Dawn) and ceremonially carried into the house. It was lit by the head of the family with much ado. Toasts were often drunk with wine, cider or brandy, in those early morning hours, giving the participants a good head-start on the festivities. In many parts of Scandinavia, the object burnt was a fat wax candle, instead of a log. The candle was lit at Dawn and must burn until Midnight, or be considered an ill omen.
The Yule Log was said to have many magickal properties Remnants of it, or its ashes, were kept in the house throughout the year for many purposes. Among these were protection from thunderstorms or lightning, protection from hail, preserving humans from chilblains and animals from various diseases. It was customary to pour libations of wine or brandy upon the Log and to make offerings by scattering corn or bread crumbs over it. Even money was placed on the Log. Those charred "lucky coins" were then given to children or servants as gifts.
Women often kept ashes and charred bits from the log to be added to talismans they would create or added to the home alter and kept there through Twelvth Night.
Wassailing is another happy survival of an old tradition. "Wassail" comes from the Anglo-Saxon "Waes Hael", which has been translated to "Be Well," "Be Whole" or "Be Healthy." The proper response to this toast is "Drink Hael", making it a shared blessing, a mutual well-wishing. Traditionally, carolers went from door to door, singing and bearing their "Wassail Cups", to be rewarded with the drink and fruited breads or other sweets.
And no Yule celebration would be complete without a decorated tree or at the very least cut evergreens added through the house for decoration. This custom is thought to originate in the Roman custom of decorating homes with laurel and evergreen trees at the Kalends of January (the Roman Winter Solstice celebration).
For my family, we have decorated a tree, will be lighting a yule log, drinking Meade, and exchanging gifts; however we also do one additional ritual that is greatly due to the influence of Reiki in my life and that is to walk a circle of protection around our home as a family with bundles of smoking incense leading the way (out of doors we have less problems with keeping incense bundles burning than sage)...We walk the circle three times saying a prayer (offering gratitude at the first turn, remembering past years and those who are no longer with us on the second turn and asking for a blessing on the home and those who live within during the final lap)and sealing each of the four directions (N,S,E,W) with the symbol of Cho Ku Rei.
If you would like to add this to your Family Traditions it is a very nice evening activity for young and old. And in my opinion teaches children especially what the true importance of the holiday and that is Keeping the Vigil as our ancestors did in the past.
So I offer to you a Blessed Solstice...and Safe Happy Holidays.
Hugs
Retha

What Reiki Is All About
I am often asked to describe what Reiki is and I never find the answer an easy one...
When I received my first attunement, I would tell people, "Reiki is a Universal Healing Energy that I am able to channel directly into a person or event."
Still true, but I was so very naive then...
Now I tell my students, "If you are seeking unconditional love, if you are seeking forgiveness, if you are seeking empowerment, if you are seeking the utmost in inner peace, if you are seeking the complete healing of yourself in all forms, past, present and future...Reiki can do that. If you are seeking a higher level of understanding, calling it enlightenment, or merely understanding that you will be operating from here on out from the vibrational energies of your third eye and crown chakras...Reiki can do that. If you are seeking relief from suffering in all of it's forms...Reiki can do that. However..."
And this is where my students stop listening...because they want the changes Reiki can bring so badly...
"However, if you do not want to embrace change, do not seek out the powers of Reiki, because Reiki is going to shake you up...Reiki is going to Rock Your World...Reiki is going to cause great CHANGE in your life and your lifestyle..."
And this is where my students always nod their heads, saying, "I understand..."
But can anyone possibly understand the changes that Reiki causes in their life before experiencing it first hand? Healing, intuition, understanding, compassion, unconditional love, bliss...unbelievable gratitude for the Sacred that is in everything and everyone...are just words until they become part of self...
Reiki is a way of life that once embraced changes who you were in the moment you began...
I have never had a student who regrets taking the Reiki Path.
The question is, "Are you ready to face Change?"

My Inaugural Post...
I have been telling my students for years that I am going to start a website...but recently, I'm drawn more and more to interaction...and so my website for the classes and services I offer will be this blog.
If you have managed t find me in this early stage of development, I hope you will return often because I have much to share; however, I believe that we all have something to contribute... and so that includes everyone...students, past and present, and readers, from near and far.I love the strangely intimate relationships that happen online and count myself extraordinarily lucky to have met people globally whom I would have never had the chance to meet prior to the technological generation we live in...and isn't it interesting that some of the people closest to my heart do not even live on the same continent, nor have we even met...
Reiki has brought into my life a true understanding and appreciation for all of the principles that I was taught as a child...Unconditional Love, Gratitude, Creation, Karma...Forgiveness. I do not know where I would have turned if not to the internal strength my father helped me to develop through his many stories, lessons, meditations, chants, and prayers as I journeyed through decades of turmoil, trauma, and tragedies...many harsh life lessons that have brought me full circle, placing me solidly on the Sacred Path that I now follow...
I offer many classes which include Reiki I, Reiki II, and Master Level Reiki, but the greater adventure begins after the first attunement when you start to gain an understanding of the Universal Energy that is in and all around each of us...
Use this blog to ask questions about Reiki...or to find out more about others pursuing a life richer because of Reiki...
I won't promise that every blog entry will be filled with enlightened insights...or even pretty zen moments...because although we're all sacred, we're also human, a combination of lightness and darkness...
I do promise to try to not be overly boring...
For each blog entry and each reader, commenter, and contributor, I will be filled with Gratitude. So please, comment...share your thoughts and own insights into what the reiki Lifestyle means to you.
If you find yourself nearby, I live in a small town between Dayton and Cincinnati, convenient to I-75...and if you would like to inquire about classes, would like a personalized Reiki session, or just have questions about Reiki ... feel free to email me at ReikiDojo@gmail.com.
